This 48 place children’s nursery for the Great Yarmouth Community Trust was created by joining together and remodelling a set of existing early 20th century buildings on a Grade 1 Listed site.
Two new ‘linking’ buildings were created to knit together the existing structures, create new service areas and to enable full wheelchair access. Full refurbishment and remodelling took place internally creating a relaxed, enjoyable and co-ordinated set of spaces with modern services.
The design focuses around the needs of the children and staff with child-height windows, vision panels, sink units, benching and kitchen units designed specially. The use of curved partitions helped to break down the rigidity and institutional feel of the existing buildings and made for more interesting circulation and classroom spaces. All this was achieved on a very modest budget.
